NEO: The First Degree

Image

In a world where nature and humanity are often separated or put against each other, 'The First Degree' questions the very relationships that keep us tied together. Grounded under the umbrella theme of symbiosis, the issue depicts three stages to invite the audience to reflect on their interactions with nature: is it tension, virtue or hope?

NEO is an independent Southeast Asian publication that explores the intersections between science, nature and fashion through a culturally relevant lens for the youth. It aims to break down barriers in science and climate communication through utilising fashion as a visual anchor to engage audiences.

Collaborating with over 20 young individuals across Southeast Asia, NEO's debut issue explores outcomes rooted in data visualisation, interpretive essays and interactive touchpoints—all supported by insightful interviews. This first issue marks an urgent call to address our relationship with the climate, inviting the very audience capable of driving the most change.

Chapter 1:

'End Of Day' // PARASITISM

Image

A narrative editorial reimagining Earth Overshoot Day through the slow decline of Indonesia’s 'eternal' Javanese edelweiss flower. Native to the volcanic highlands, its fragile existence mirrors our own relationship with the planet's finite resources.

RESEARCH

Coinciding with the final-year project, the first chapter of NEO's debut issue was born from Angeline's practice-based dissertation titled 'Dressing the Limit: Exploring Fashion Media as a Tool to Increase Awareness of Earth Overshoot Day Among Generation Z in Singapore.' Through this research, a data-heavy scientific concept underwent a double-translation process to produce an outcome containing a narrative sequence of fashion images incorporated with data and tactile interactions.

Alongside two rounds of user-testing conducted with Gen Z subjects in Singapore, the outcomes were supported with data analysis by Asya Cecilia Sharon Haryanto and guided by valuable insights from an interview with Singaporean climate communicator Woo Qiyun (@theweirdandwild). Together, these collaborations achieved a successful translation of scientific concepts into an engaging, yet informative fashion media outcome.
